Distributed ledger technology is built around the concept of a database that is consensually shared and synchronized across a distributed network. This network’s infrastructure consists of nodes, also known as oracles, that run a particular client application for which ever blockchain network they are trying to connect to.

Distributed ledger technology is built both on permissionless  blockchains, like that of Bitcoin, and permissioned (i.e. private) blockchains.
